November 11, 2011 (Vietnamica) — The U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, issued a warning Nov. 5 indicating it had received intelligence that the Nigerian militant group Boko Haram may have been planning to bomb several targets in the Nigerian capital during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, also known as Eid al-Kabir, celebrated Nov. 6-8. The warning specifically mentioned the Hilton, Nicon Luxury and Sheraton hotels as potential targets.

September 7, 2011 (Vietnamica) – Famine is spreading in Africa. Tens of thousands of people in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti already have died of starvation. Yemen and Uganda are joining the list. The United Nations warns that the famine has not peaked, and more than 12 million people are in the need of humanitarian assistance, despite more than $1.5 billion in emergency aid efforts to date, the AP  reported.

China Seeks Corn Imports From South Africa; Annual Corn Imports Grow To 10 Mln Tons

August 28, 2011 (Vietnamica) – Chinese officials have visited South Africa to investigate the possibility of buying corn from the biggest producer of the grain on the continent. China expects to import 2 million tons of yellow corn in the 2011-12 marketing year to meet rising demand. According to South China Grain Trade Centre, China’s corn imports may grow to more than 10 million tons annually in five years (Asian AgriBiz, Aug 24).
