Vietnam: National Cluster Could Increase Coffee Export Revenue to US$20 Bln

March 26, 2012 (Vietnamica) – A project of “National Coffee Cluster” has been submitted to the Government by the privately-run Trung Nguyen Coffee. The new agro-industrial prototype is expected to increase the country’s coffee export revenue to US$20 billion, ten times higher than current level. In addition, sustained growth of coffee industry would create five to six million jobs. To this end, a role model will be carried out at EaTul commune, Cu M’Gar district, Dak Lak province this year.

Vietnam: Ministry of Finance Plans to Legalize Sports Betting

March 6, 2012 (Vietnamica) – The Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance disclosed that it plans to legalize sports betting, adding this would help limit the social damage caused by underground gambling syndicates. There are a few of casinos in Vietnam where only foreigners are allowed to enter. Meanwhile, many Vietnamese regularly cross the border to gamble at Cambodian casinos. The Minister of Finance – Vuong Dinh Hue – has recently paid a visit to Singapore in order to learn how large-scale betting operations work (WSJ, Mar 5).

Vietnam to Pilot VAT Refunds Scheme for Foreign Visitors

January 29, 2012 (Vietnamica) — The Vietnamese government has decided to pilot a value-added-tax refunds scheme for foreign visitors in July. Foreigners who purchase in Vietnam and leave the country via Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi or Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City will receive VAT reimbursements (Thanh Nien News, Jan 28).
